So. Linden Ave Grade Sep

So. Linden Avenue and Scott St

Background

The City South San Francisco and San Bruno have partnered to sponsor a project to study the creation of grade separations at the railroad crossings located at South Linden Avenue in South San Francisco and Scott Street in San Bruno. Grade separations improve safety, reduce the need for train horns, and improve traffic flow by completely separating train traffic from vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.

Project Summary

The South Linden Avenue and Scott Street Grade Separation Project (Project) is proposed to improve safety and decrease expected future traffic delays due to growth in vehicle traffic, greater frequency of Caltrain service, and the eventual addition of high speed rail. South Linden Avenue is located in South San Francisco; Scott Street is in San Bruno. Although located in different cities, the two grade separations are proposed to be undertaken as a combined effort. Since the two crossing locations are located only 1,850 feet apart, the grade separation of one crossing could affect the other.

South Linden Avenue Grade Separation

The South Linden Avenue crossing is the only remaining at-grade crossing in the City of South San Francisco. The City’s adopted general plan calls for transforming the surrounding Lindenville area to higher-use office and regional commercial centers which would make this intersection a central hub for area traffic. Even with transportation demand management programs, traffic is expected to increase in the area. Increased traffic due to this proposed redevelopment has the potential to increase the incidence of train vehicle collisions.

The South Linden Grade Separation Project would improve both safety and traffic flow on South Linden Avenue and help promote redevelopment.

Scott Street Grade Separation

Following the completion of the San Bruno Caltrain Grade Separation Project, Scott Street is the only remaining at-grade crossing in the City of San Bruno. Additional details related to Scott St can be found on the San Bruno webpage.

Status

The project is currently in the Planning Study phase. The purpose of the Planning Study is to evaluate options for creating the grade separations and select a single preferred alternative for the project that will move forward for environmental review and design.
