The city of South San Francisco is strategically located on the west shore of the San Francisco Bay, in northern San Mateo county, 10 miles south of San Francisco. The city is also located along the Bay Area's main transportation routes, including Highways 101, 280, Caltrain, and San Francisco International Airport. South San Francisco is the birthplace of the biotechnology industry, housing over 80 companies on some 3.5 million square feet.

The Department's philosophy is one of participative management, with a high degree of emphasis on training and education. It employs team and community-oriented policing and problem-solving concepts and recognizes the importance of staying contemporary with technological advances.

Project Guardian

The South San Francisco Police Department is pleased to announce the implementation of Project Guardian.  Project Guardian provides caregivers and family members with the opportunity to register vulnerable persons and those with special needs (including but not limited to Autism, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, or mental health diagnoses) into a free, confidential database which is managed and maintained by the police department.  Read more here about Project Guardian.

Chief Scott Campbell welcomes you to the South San Francisco Police Department online. The South San Francisco Police Department serves a population of over 60,000 residents, and nearly 100,000 people who work here during the week.

The South San Francisco Police Department is allotted 84 sworn and 35 civilian positions and is divided into three Divisions: Operations, Investigations, and Services. The Operations Division includes Patrol, Community Outreach Team, K-9, SWAT/Hostage Negotiations, and Traffic/Motors. The Investigations Division includes Criminal Investigations and Criminal Interdiction Unit. The Services Division includes Communications, Community Relations, Property/Evidence, Records, Planning, and Recruiting. Each Division is commanded by a Captain.
