The ‘Industrial City’ continues Women’s History Month by recognizing four local leaders

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., April 26, 2024 –In continued celebration of Women’s History Month, the City of South San Francisco is recognizing four incredible women as Women of the Year: Amanda AnthonyAva RomeroDaina Lujan, and Lydia Pomposo.

“South City is home to countless amazing women. Every woman nominated is deserving of recognition,” said Mayor James Coleman. “The women selected for this year’s award have gone above and beyond in serving our community, and it is my great honor to acknowledge their leadership and their significant contributions.”

  • Amanda Anthony is Board Vice President of South San Francisco Unified School District and Economic Development Manager for the City of Redwood City. Amanda is recognized by her nominators for progressing local needs by demonstration of her actions.
  • Ava Romero is a food blogger and award-winning chef. Ava inspires others through her own small business, podcast, social media, and is the author of an upcoming cookbook/memoir celebrating her journey as an autistic celebrity chef. She is recognized by her nominators as a woman who’s always going forward and contributes to the growth and positivity of South San Francisco.
  • Daina Lujan is Board President of South San Francisco Unified School District, Director of Human Resources for the Jefferson Union High School District, and Adjunct Faculty for the Early Childhood Education Department for the San Mateo County Community College District. Daina was nominated for her knowledge of education issues and her advocacy for early childhood education.
  • Lydia Pomposo is Chair of the Cultural Arts Commission, Program Chair of the SSF Women's Club, a member of the domestic abuse prevention organization ALLICE, Alliance for Community Empowerment, and served on the City's Age-Friendly Task Force. She was nominated for being an active volunteer and a great resource for the community.

The honorees were recognized at the April 24 City Council meeting.
