“What’s Happening East of 101?“ program to include biotech leaders from drug discovery, biomanufacturing, and therapeutic innovations

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., June 4, 2024 – This summer, the City of South San Francisco is thrilled to announce the launch of a groundbreaking speaker series, developed in collaboration with Biocom California, the leading advocate for California’s life science sector. Led by the City’s Economic and Community Development department (ECD), the What’s Happening East of 101? program aims to bridge the gap between South City residents and the vibrant biotech community east of Highway 101.

This innovative initiative is a platform designed to offer residents an exclusive glimpse into the dynamic world of biotechnology and life sciences. Recognizing the limited interaction between residents on the west side of Highway 101 and the individuals and companies operating on the east side, this series seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the impactful work happening just beyond their doorstep.

"We're excited to partner with Biocom California to launch this transformative Speaker Series," said Sharon Ranals, City Manager of the City of South San Francisco. "Our goal is to provide our residents with insights into the groundbreaking work being done in their own backyard and how it may directly relate to their lives. Whether it's understanding advancements in healthcare, potential job opportunities, or the profound impact on our community, we believe this series will serve as a catalyst for meaningful connections."

The Speaker Series will feature talks from leading life science companies, each offering an in-depth exploration of their organization's mission, research endeavors, product portfolio, and contributions to the community. These sessions will provide invaluable insights into the diverse range of work being conducted in South San Francisco, covering areas such as drug discovery, biomanufacturing, and therapeutic innovations.

"We're thrilled to participate in the South San Francisco Speaker Series and share our members’ passion for advancing science and improving patient lives," said Michelle Nemits, Bay Area Executive Director of Biocom California. "This platform not only allows biotech organizations to showcase their work, but also provides them an opportunity to engage with their neighbors and foster collaboration within the community."

Through this collaborative effort, the City of South San Francisco and Biocom California aim to empower residents with knowledge, encourage dialogue, and inspire future partnerships between the local community and the biotech industry.

The inaugural session of the South San Francisco Speaker Series is scheduled to take place 7 p.m. on Friday, July 26 at the South San Francisco Library | Parks & Recreation building on 901 Civic Center. Childcare services will be provided. Featured speakers and additional sessions will be announced in the coming weeks.
