Construction of Safeway Set to Begin Soon

New supermarket will occupy the long vacant site at 190 El Camino Real at Spruce Avenue

The City of South San Francisco is pleased to announce an important step forward for our community. The City issued a Building permit for a new Safeway grocery retail center located at 190 El Camino Real, and contractors are mobilizing to begin construction within the coming weeks.

The private construction project being developed by SteelWave with Safeway as a tenant was long delayed due to global financial uncertainty, significant increase in interest rates, and a decrease in institutional lending over the past several years.

“This project represents not only an enhancement of local shopping options but also a commitment to economic growth and job creation in the city of South San Francisco,” shared Mayor James Coleman. “This new development will provide residents with long awaited access to essential groceries and services, fostering convenience and supporting our community's needs.”

In a future phase, SteelWave also plans to build a 750,000 square feet Class A life science campus and 183 multifamily homes (15% of them being affordable housing) on sites adjacent to the 68,000 square feet flagship Safeway store.

Construction of the Safeway and associated retail and dining spaces is estimated to take 18-20 months. We encourage residents to stay informed by visiting the City’s official website for updates and further information as the project progresses. Your support and engagement are invaluable as we work together to bring this development to fruition.
