Measure W helps fund one of the first three all-electric pools on the Peninsula

Construction is underway to bring more than 45,400 square feet of aquatic space to the new Orange Memorial Park Aquatic Center. The City of South San Francisco is scheduled to break ground at 1 West Orange Avenue this Saturday, March 30 at 10:00 a.m. featuring Mayor James Coleman and Parks & Recreation Commissioner Ruth DeNardi as keynote speakers of the event.

Orange Memorial Aquatic Center will be the one of the first three all-electric pools on the Peninsula, featuring two pools, a 10-lane cool-water lap pool outdoors, and a 7-lane warmer-water teaching/recreation pool indoors. The state of art all-electric center will also host a swimmer’s lounge, locker rooms, and rentable multi-use rooms.

“I grew up swimming in Orange Pool as part of the South San Francisco Aquatic Club, and it has served our team and community well,” shared Mayor James Coleman. “The pool has since exceeded its lifespan and our community has outgrown its capacity, so we’re grateful to have the funding of Measure W to help us meet our community’s needs with not one, but two new pools!”

Measure W was instrumental in funding the new Police Station, the Community Civic Campus, the Orange Memorial Park Sports Fields, and now the new aquatic center. The new facility is expected to open Summer 2025 and will be adjacent to the existing Orange Pool to allow for continued aquatic operations throughout construction. The Orange Pool building will then be demolished thereafter.

“When construction of our new pools is complete, I’m looking forward to being the first cannonball,” added Coleman.

Orange Pool has been South San Francisco’s only indoor municipal swimming pool since 1971, operating year-round, seven days a week, offering critical life-skill/safety learn-to swim programs, recreation, fitness, therapy, health, and wellness activities.
