Code Enforcement Division

The City of South San Francisco has adopted Municipal Codes that can help aesthetically enhance our City as well as keep it safe. The Code Enforcement Division protects the quality of life, property values and the environment for the residents and businesses of South San Francisco. This is accomplished by developing and promoting safe and healthy neighborhoods through education and compliance of our codes, ordinances and permits in a proper and timely fashion within the limits of the law.

The City respects the desire of all residents and business owners to enjoy their property. The City also believes that responsible use of private property includes respect for community values, as contained in the City Municipal Code and Zoning Ordinance.

In order to assure that these values are upheld, the City Municipal Code and Zoning Ordinance will be enforced according to the following principles:

  • The City will enforce its ordinances based on the violation, not the violator. The focus of our code enforcement is on the nuisance activity or structure, without regard to the source of the complaint or the nature or character of the violator.
  • The City seeks compliance first and foremost. Enforcement efforts are directed as providing opportunities for solving problems and eliminating violations, not punishing people.

Avoid Code Violations When Planning a New Project

Prior to undertaking any improvement projects, owners are encouraged to research whether a planning or building permit is required. Planning approval is often required for improvement projects on the exterior of buildings, including windows, walls, stairways, and decks. If a property owner is not sure whether a planning or building permit is required for a project, check with the Planning/Building department by calling 650-877-8535 or see a list of jobs that require or are exempt from permits(PDF, 41KB).
