Laser Cutter Unveiled!

South San Francisco Public Library’s new Glowforge Laser Cutter made its debut at a recent Saturday afternoon workshop when it was made available for the first time to an eager group of makers. The students received instructions on the intricacies of the equipment’s operation and the principles of computer-aided design. Afterward, they used the laser cutter to produce flawless cuts of bird house panels that were later assembled with hot glue guns. The laser cutter can cut through wood, acrylic, leather, fabric, cardboard, and more. It is also capable of engraving metal and glass. It is great for creating customized objects such as jewelry, everyday household items, picture frames, boxes, and signs. The list is long! The new Glowforge Laser Cutter was acquired through a grant from the California State Library. For your chance to attend a laser cutter workshop, follow the library on social media or subscribe to our email newsletter.

What I am: The Glowforge is a desktop carbon dioxide (CO2) laser cutter with a 40-Watt laser beam generated by a glass tube attached to the machine's framework. The beam exits the tube and bounces through a series of mirrors, where it focuses into a tiny beam. The laser is the width of a human hair that cuts, engraves, and shapes designs from a variety of materials.
