Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Mission Statement

The South San Francisco Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program will train individuals in neighborhoods, businesses and industries in emergency preparedness and basic disaster response techniques. The training will enable them, as volunteers, to assist emergency service personnel during a disaster.

CERT Training

The CERT program offers essential training to enhance your readiness, response, and recovery capabilities in the face of disasters. The CERT basic training course, conducted annually in the spring, spans five 3-hour sessions and two 8-hour sessions.

Key topics covered in the CERT basic training include:

  • Disaster Preparedness
  • Fire Safety and Suppression
  • Disaster Medical Operations
  • Light Search and Rescue Operations
  • Disaster Psychology and Team Organization
  • CPR and First Aid Certification

Upon completion of the CERT program, participants have the opportunity to join the South San Francisco CERT Team, a dedicated group of volunteers. The team convenes monthly for ongoing training in various essential skills such as shelter operations, communications, and support for Emergency Operations Centers.

CERT Communications Group

The SSF CERT HAM radio group comprises licensed amateur radio operators trained under the guidance of the city's fire department. This group plays a critical role, particularly in emergencies like major earthquakes, where conventional communication systems may fail for extended periods. Weekly meetings include radio check-ins, drills, and ongoing training sessions.
