The South San Francisco Fire Department (SSFFD) was established in 1908, following the city's incorporation in 1905 and the impact of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which highlighted the need for organized fire services. Initially a volunteer-based organization, we began transitioning to a professional department in the 1920s, acquiring motorized equipment and expanding its capabilities.

Throughout the mid-20th century, we modernized and expanded, adapting to increased industrial activity during World War II and integrating advanced firefighting techniques and equipment in the 1950s and 1960s. The 1970s saw the introduction of emergency medical services (EMS), and the 1980s brought technological advancements such as computerized dispatch systems.

In the 1990s, the department emphasized fire prevention and community education. The 2000s and 2010s saw further technological integration, disaster preparedness, and a focus on sustainability. The department celebrated its centennial in 2008, marking 100 years of dedicated service.

Today, we continue to innovate, incorporating advanced data analytics, enhancing firefighter safety, and engaging the community through various programs. The members of the South San Francisco Fire Department are proudly providing South San Francisco residents with services in Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Prevention, Urban Search and Rescue, Hazardous Materials, Public Education, Disaster Preparedness, and Marine Search and Rescue.
