History Collection

The South San Francisco Local History collection is devoted to the historical development and current events of South San Francisco. The Local History collection was established in 1967 and is located  at Grand Ave. Library, 306 Walnut Avenue.

While many of the photographs are available online, the entire collection of photos and documents are not yet scanned but can be provided as an in-library research loan with staff assistance.  The History Room is not open to the public.  Please call (650) 877-8530 for assistance.

There are approximately 2000 photographs, slides from the 1850s to the present. The collection also contains local school photographs from 1917 to present.

Portions of the photograph collections are available online. The
Bits of History collection for San Mateo County focuses mostly on buildings and/or sites. Shades of California - South San Francisco is a historical photograph collection focusing mostly on residents. Photographs were donated to the Library by local residents and digitized to be shared with the community. The bulk of the photographs are currently being scanned and processed and will be made available online as soon as possible.
