Library Field Trips

We welcome all kindergarten through 8th grade classes to the public library during the school year. This is an excellent time for children to get their first library cards and to learn about the great things available at their library.

To book a visit for your class, please call the SSF Main Library at (650) 829-3860 or the Grand Avenue Branch Library at (650) 877-8530 at least two weeks in advance.

Meeting Classes

Librarians like to meet with the class for the first visit. We tell the children how to use the library, present stories or book reviews, and give an orientation to the computer catalog and express check machines depending on the level of the class and the request of the teacher. Our main goal is to make the visit as pleasant as possible and to encourage the children to return often with their families.

For subsequent class visits, please call for an appointment in order to avoid scheduling conflicts.

It is helpful to bring adult assistants. Our suggested ratio is one adult for every nine children. We discourage double class visits because the children's area becomes very crowded and the children do not get the attention they deserve. If the class visit is canceled because of weather or schedule changes, please notify the library as soon as possible.

Library Cards

Teachers distribute library card applications to students without cards. A parent or guardian must sign the application. The first library card is free. Please bring in the signed library card applications to the library at least one week prior to the visit so the cards can be prepared in time.

You can obtain applications at the library or click here to download: Library Card Application

Lost Cards, Fines, and Borrowing Times

If a card has been lost, the replacement fee is $1.00. Students who forget to bring their cards will be unable to check out materials. Children should not check out books for other students on their cards.

If fines on a record exceed $15.00, the student will be unable to check out books. The late fine for children’s materials is 15 cents per day per item.

Library policy permits children access to all materials and resources in the system – print, audio visual and online (such as Internet). It is a decision of the teacher or parent to limit the number and type of items a child may borrow or use during their class visit.
