One of the primary objectives of SAMCEDA is to support, champion, recognize and bring attention to the San Mateo County business community. All too often the contributions made by business to the economic health and well being of a community are overlooked and under appreciated. For San Mateo County a healthy business community directly translates to a healthy community and SAMCEDA strives to spread that message in a variety of ways.

ChinaSF, a program initiated by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, has identified the City of South San Francisco as a regional partner to create better linkages with East Asia. ChinaSF has two offices in China, Shanghai and Beijing. If ChinaSF has potential inbound deals, they would reach out to us to see if we can help the company located in our city. Likewise, if we receive inquiries from companies that are looking for assistance to expand into China's market, ChinaSF will provide them assistance to meet with the appropriate people in China. A similar organization focused on Silicon Valley was established last year and reached out to our City to participate in their activities, which are the same as China SF.

We are the first city in the Bay Area and the nation to plan for Biotechnology growth. Three decades ago, industry leader Genentech began operations in South San Francisco with 2,000 square feet and four employees. Today, South San Francisco has 15 R&D campuses and nearly 9 million square feet of laboratory, office and manufacturing space. And it is growing. We want to continue to strengthen our reputation and our competitive advantage. We collaborate with our major Real Estate Investment Trusts to help companies find the right location. We also have a team of staff people who will roll up their sleeves and help you move into a space as fast as possible.
According to the California Healthcare Institute (CHI), the Bay Area retains the highest concentration of biotech employees in the state. We understood that the biotech industry would grow and we wanted to prepare for that growth. Our work has been successful since the biotech industry and employment have grown continuously since 1995. Even during the recent recession, we continued to see growth.
